Q: What is whey protein?
Whey protein powder is a super-nutritious food that comes from milk. It’s high in protein (of course), and also has a ton of other nutrients and amino acids that are great for rebuilding muscles and a healthy body.
Q: How is whey protein powder made?
In cheese making, curds are separated from liquid whey (remember “Little Miss Muffet”?). Whey protein powder basically comes from filtering out the liquid until you’re left with a solid whey powder. It’s a little more complicated than that, but that’s why our food scientists have mastered the process. So you don’t have to.
Q: What does the “isolate” part mean?
Whey protein isolate (WPI) comes from taking whey protein concentrate and further refining it. We prefer isolate to concentrate because it has a much higher concentration of protein and still contains all of the beneficial nutrients and aminos in whey concentrate. Basically, with isolates you get more protein in less powder.
Q: Why do people eat it?
People eat UNION Protein for lots of reasons. Serious athletes take it after workouts to replenish their bodies and build muscle. Other people have it in their morning smoothies as an excellent source of nutrition and energy that’ll keep them full longer.
Q: Should I start eating whey?
Short answer: yes. UNION Protein is a great source of nutrition for pretty much anyone looking for a great source of nutrition to fuel a fulfilling life. Whether you’re serious about working out, or your work keeps you seriously busy, UNION can help you keep going strong.
Q: What makes UNION Protein so great?
A lot of things. At UNION, our philosophy is doing things the right way. That means through every step of the process of making our products, we always choose quality over convenience or cost. It starts with the best-quality milk from regional farmers and naturally raised cows. We make our WPI using a state-of-the-art protein-to-volume cold-processed microfiltration, which is basically a fancy way of saying we put in the extra effort to provide you with a protein-packed powder that’s not only super-nutritious but tastes great.
Q: Does it have GMOs?
No. And sourcing milk that’s non-GMO is a lot more challenging than you might think (whey harder?). But we believe it’s worth the extra effort to provide you with a product that’s wholesome and all-natural.
Q: I avoid eating things with dairy or lactose.
That’s fine — even though that wasn’t really a question. All UNION Protein products are lactose-free.
Q: How can something made with milk be lactose-free?
Despite being derived from dairy or milk, UNION WHEY is made lactose-free through our natural cold-processed microfiltration. We take extra steps to say goodbye to those pesky lactose sugar chains so we help all our customers digest well.
Q: Does it have MSG?
No. Gross. Why would we add MSG?
Q: Does it have soy?
Q: Do you use any fillers?
None whatsoever. You pay for whey protein isolate. So we assume all you want is whey protein isolate.
Q: How many servings are in each bag?
14 per 1 lb. bag. That’s a two-week supply if you have one serving per day. We did the math. You’re welcome.
Q: What are the best ways to eat it?
That’s totally up to you. We, and a lot of our customers, love it mixed into a smoothie or shake. Sometimes we go crazy with kale, chai seeds, and açaí berries, even though we don’t really know how to pronounce that last one. Other times we keep it simple and just shake a couple scoops into a glass of almond milk. The possibilities are limitless; it’s totally up to you.
Q: How much should I use? How often?
At UNION Protein, we believe balance is the right approach. Depending on your activity level, there’s no need to overdo it. Most people won’t need more than one serving a day with a well-balanced diet. As always, please consult with your health-care practitioner for your individual macronutrient needs, including protein consumption.
Q: Who do you give your in-kind and cash donations to?
We believe everyone has the right to live a well-nourished life. Right now we’re concentrating our efforts to improve the lives of active Americans who struggle to find enough nutrition for themselves and their families as well as U.S. service members.
Q: How do you help those people?
Right now we partner with two amazing organizations: The Food Group, Minnesota’s largest food bank, and care package distribution organizations. To find out more about the impact you have every time you buy a bag of UNION Protein, visit our impact page.
Q: How do you choose your partners?
We work tirelessly to maximize the good your giving can do. That’s why we take vetting our giving partners seriously, and we feel our two current partners are among the best at what they do. As we grow throughout the country, we are always looking for great partners to make a bigger impact. If you have another organization you think we should be involved with, please contact us to let us know.
Q: So how are you supporting your giving partners?
We like to get involved in any way we can. So that can be anything from in-kind donations (giving away bags of UNION Protein), monetary support (cutting a check), or volunteering our time (rolling up our sleeves and doing the work ourselves).
